Planning a play area for this modern family incorporates personal and play space for every member of the family. With a generous space available, the plan includes three distinct areas including play areas for three lucky kids as well as a fully equipped sports themed audio visual adult space.

Playhouse

A cozy corner of the room is the perfect place for a playhouse built just for the littlest members of the family. The whimsical playhouse incorporates private and playful areas where each of the kids can get away from the main area for a private tea party, quiet corner to read a book or a playful ball pit and stage for an imaginative playtime.

Custom elements in this area include:

– Dutch door with customized child door and playful custom paint job

– Comfortable cushioned area perfect for some private quiet time with handmade pillows

– Built in covered storage in the private area

– Hidden window from the private area looking into the TV space

– Slide egress from the clubhouse

– Platform stage with drawer storage built under the platform

– Ball pit built into the back portion of the stage that can be covered to extend the stage and additional storage in the future

Sports Lounge

This area of the basement embraces the fan favorite Washington Capitals hockey team. The focal wall in a bright team red houses the large flat screen television bordered by hockey boards to mimic stadium boards from the Washington DC Verizon Center.  This area needed to visually and technically please the adults as well as provide comfort and availability to the children.

Custom elements in this area include:

– 60″ Samsung Plasma TV

– Custom built recessed display cases to house 2 authentic autographed team jerseys with silk screened plexi-glass panels

– Xbox, Playstation Blueray, tuner, surround sound stereo, intelligent remote

– Carpet and hardwood floor customized with the Capitals team logo

– Comfortable sectional couch with custom designed pillows

Open Play

The open play area of the space pulls together the whimsical elements of the playhouse with the bright sports theme of the Lounge area. This open space provides everyone elements of fun, storage, and entertainment.

Custom elements in this area include:

– 2 mini-refrigerators that have been built into hockey boards

– Wall mounted flat screen television

– Supported ceiling hinges to connect swings or hanging hammock chairs

– Basketball hoop

– Dartboard

– Bench seats with custom bench pads and hidden storage

– Built in shelving that can be manually rearranged to accommodate changing needs

– Creative flooring solution combining carpet and marmoleum which is a durable and attractive floor for playing

This creative and personalized area incorporated the kids and parents spaces with whimsy, practicality and fun. There will be many hours of enjoyment for everyone and will grow with the family for years to come.

It is finally time to admit that she is too big for a toddler bed while the rest of the room is still perfectly adorable for your little princess. The objective in this beautiful room was to incorporate growing tastes into an already decorated space and on a budget.

A wonderful book series for little girls and a favorite of this princess is Fancy Nancy.  Nancy believes that everything is better when it is “fancy” and a little girl’s version of fancy is whimsical, colorful and fun. This project was made all the more special because this little girl was involved in picking the accessories and making the room her own special and fancy place.

The simple poster bed was found online and chosen for its simple detail and solid white color – a perfect starting point. Detail colors were chosen based on the fabrics already in the room and luckily all remaining fabric had been kept during the initial installation and served well for details later.  Since the intent of the look is to appear that a little girl has decorated the bed, the details do not need to be perfect – simply cut the fabrics and tie them together to create the canopy.

The addition of the vines, flowers and birds added to the whimsy already painted on the walls. When adding the decoration to the canopy, pay attention that some of the details are added specifically seen when lying in the bed – she loves that.  Once the details were painted on the bed and the main elements added to the canopy, it was time to accessorize as Nancy would say. Additional lace was added to the floor lamp and remnant fabrics from the floor and window seat were tied to the four posters. These small additions tied the room together beautifully.

The bedding was the final element and is a combination of blankets and a comforter, all deemed fancy by the littlest designer and picked from her already full closet of accessories. She loves and is so proud of her contribution to her new bed – sleep well princess.
